Crossword Genius

Formally admit religious follower ignoring top court (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

induct

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'formally admit' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'religious follower ignoring top court' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'court' could be 'ct' (abbreviation used in road names) and 'ct' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for induct that I've seen before include "Bring formally into organisation, initiate" , "Accept into an exclusive society or group" , "Bring or lead in as for initiation" , "Formally admit (to a post or organisation)" , "Admit as a member" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
