Fragrant species, say: a way forward when money’s invested (9)

I believe the answer is:
eglantine
'fragrant species' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.
'say a way forward when money's invested' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'say' could be 'eg' (both can mean 'for example') and 'eg' is found within the answer.
'a' could be 'an' and 'an' is found within the answer.
'way' could be 'n' (Compass direction - North) and 'n' is present in the answer.
'money' could be 'l' (L can mean 'pounds') and 'l' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'tie' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for eglantine that I've seen before include "Milton's honeysuckle" , "Sweet brier" , "Inelegant (anag) - plant" , "Rose, growing wild" , "Wild rose, sweet briar" .)
