Crossword Genius

Free rent again? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

release

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'free' is the definition.
(to release someone is to free them)

'rent again?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'rent' could be 'lease' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'lease' is found within the answer.
'again?' could be 're' (prefix meaning 'again') and 're' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for release that I've seen before include "Possibly film" , "Free - delivery" , "press announcement" , "Authorise publication" , "Free from confinement" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
