Free to fail, getting nothing twice (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

loose

'free' is the definition.
(I know that free can be written as loose)

'fail getting nothing twice' is the wordplay.
'fail' becomes 'lose' (I've seen this in other clues).
'getting' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'nothing twice' becomes 'o' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'lose' going around 'o' is 'LOOSE'.

'to' is the link.

(Other definitions for loose that I've seen before include "easy with one's favours" , "Lax - inaccurate - unbound" , "Not strict" , "wobbly" , "Promiscuous" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
