I believe the answer is:

amos

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'prophets' is the definition.
(I know that Amos is a prophets)

'french are avoiding a biblical character one of' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'are' could be 'a' (short for 'are', historical unit of measurement) and 'a' is located in the answer.
'character' could be 's' and 's' is found in the answer.
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'm' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for amos that I've seen before include "Part of bible" , "Hebrew prophet" , "Old Testament book" , "man" , "Biblical prophet and OT book" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
