Crossword Genius

French flower maybe opening in a bit (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

somme

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'french flower' is the definition.
'somme' can be an answer for 'flower' (I've seen this before). I'm not sure about the 'french' bit.

'maybe opening in a bit' is the wordplay.
'opening' says to take the initial letters.
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'a bit' becomes 'some' (I've seen this in other clues).
The initial letter of 'maybe' is 'm'.
'm' inserted within 'some' is 'SOMME'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for somme that I've seen before include "runner" , "WWI battle site" , "French river known from World War 1" , "Scene of WW One battles" , "French river, scene of 1916 battles" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
