Crossword Genius

Frolics stimulating a consuming interest (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

capers

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'frolics' is the definition.
('caper' can be a synonym of 'frolic')

'stimulating a consuming interest' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'a' could be 'per' (eg 'one a day' means 'one per day') and 'per' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'cas' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for capers that I've seen before include "Scrape (anag)" , "Pungent pickled flower buds" , "Jumps, runs about playfully" , "Skips, dances" , "Jolly japes" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
