Crossword Genius

From star, slipping to small roles (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

extras

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'small roles' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I don't understand how they can define each other.

'from star slipping' is the wordplay.
'from' becomes 'ex' ('from' in Latin).
'slipping' indicates an anagram.
'star' anagrammed gives 'tras'.
'ex'+'tras'='EXTRAS'

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for extras that I've seen before include "Additional items surplus to requirements, spares" , "Spear carriers" , "5 [BYE BYE]" , "Actors hired for crowd scenes" , "Accessories" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
