Crossword Genius

Fruit always once being primarily wrapped in fabric (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tayberry

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fruit always' is the definition.
'tayberry' can be an answer for 'fruit' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'always' bit.

'being primarily wrapped in fabric' is the wordplay.
'being primarily wrapped' becomes 'ayb' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'fabric' becomes 'terry' (terry is a kind of fabric).
'ayb' placed within 'terry' is 'TAYBERRY'.

'once' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tayberry that I've seen before include "Dark red soft fruit" , "Scottish fruit" , "Cross between blackberry and raspberry" , "Red fruit named after Scots river" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
