Crossword Genius

Fruit for ruler's wife (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sultana

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fruit' is the definition.
(sultana is a kind of fruit)

'ruler's wife' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'ruler' could be 'sultan' (sultan is a kind of ruler) and 'sultan' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'a' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'for' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sultana that I've seen before include "sweet little thing" , "Sovereign's mother perhaps" , "Grape; ruler's wife" , "Muslim ruler's wife perhaps" , "Shrivelled up" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
