Fruit trees over the hills? (7)

I believe the answer is:
oranges
'fruit trees' is the definition.
(orange is a kind of fruit tree)
'over the hills?' is the wordplay.
'over' becomes 'o' (cricket abbreviation).
'the hills?' becomes 'ranges' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'o'+'ranges'='ORANGES'
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for oranges that I've seen before include "Go snare these fruits" , "See 8" , "They are not the only fruit, wrote Jeanette Winterson" , "'Mandarins, say (7)'" , "Navel, blood and Seville are all varieties of these" .)
