I believe the answer is:

shrine

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'place of worship' is the definition.
(shrine is a kind of place of worship)

'function to take hours' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'take' could be 'r' (abbreviation for 'recipe', Latin for 'take') and 'r' is present in the answer.
'hours' could be 'h' and 'h' is located in the answer.
'function' could be 'sine' (mathematical function) and 'sine' is found within the leftover letters.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'in' is the link.

(Other definitions for shrine that I've seen before include "burial place?" , "Holy place with special associations" , "Sacred place to worship at" , "Place hallowed for special associations" , "Pilgrim's destination" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
