Crossword Genius

Funny sort of pie? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

custard

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'funny sort' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how they can define each other.

'pie?' is the second definition.
The answer and definition can be both things that one consumes for nourishment as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe you can see an association between them that I can't see?

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for custard that I've seen before include "Yellow mixture" , "Pudding accompaniment" , "Sweet sauce made with milk and eggs" , "Type of apple" , "-- Pie; -- apple" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
