Crossword Genius

Gadgets shared by soldiers and doctors (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gismos

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'gadgets' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'soldiers and doctors' is the wordplay.
'soldiers' becomes 'gis' (GI is an informal term for a US soldier).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'doctors' becomes 'MOS' (an MO is a Medical Officer).
'gis'+'mos'='GISMOS'

'shared by' is the link.
This may not be right. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for gismos that I've seen is " thingies".)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
