Gamble little in hostelry -- is it Halfway House? (2-7)
I believe the answer is:
in-between
'halfway house?' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'gamble little in hostelry' is the wordplay.
'gamble' becomes 'bet' (betting is a kind of gambling).
'little' becomes 'wee' (similar in meaning).
'in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'hostelry' becomes 'inn' (synonyms).
'bet'+'wee'='betwee'
'betwee' going into 'inn' is 'IN-BETWEEN'.
'is it' is the link.
This may not be right. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Another definition for in-between that I've seen is " Intermediate".)
