Crossword Genius

Game over between league's leading pair (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

lacrosse

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'game' is the definition.
(lacrosse is a sport)

'over between league's leading pair' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'over' could be 'across' (synonyms) and 'across' is located in the answer.
'league' could be 'l' (abbreviation) and 'l' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'e' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for lacrosse that I've seen before include "Like thirteen of the other clues in the French" , "Game played with a netted stick" , "Score's uncertain after the Spanish" , "Sport played with sticks" , "Game played with nets on sticks" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
