I believe the answer is:

canasta

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'game' is the definition.
(I know that Canasta is a type of game)

'film a film idol trimmed' is the wordplay.
'film a film' becomes 'cana' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'idol' becomes 'star' (I've seen this in another clue).
'trimmed' means to remove the last letter (the last letter is trimmed off).
'star' with its final letter taken off is 'sta'.
'cana'+'sta'='CANASTA'

'to show quantity of' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for canasta that I've seen before include "this needs two packs" , "Card game like rummy" , "Game played with two packs of cards and jokers" , "Card-game played with two packs of cards" , "Card game at a scan" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
