Crossword Genius

Gap made right in strip of land by the sea (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

breach

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'gap' is the definition.
(I know that breach is a type of gap)

'right in strip of land by the sea' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'right' could be 'r' (common abbreviation) and 'r' is found within the answer.
'land' could be 'beach' (beaching is a kind of landing) and 'beach' is found in the leftover letters.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'made' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for breach that I've seen before include "'Gap, break or hole (6)'" , "Failure to carry out promise etc" , "part of firearm, say" , "Non-observance" , "Opening - quarrel" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
