Crossword Genius

Gave some colour to Madam Butterfly (7,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

painted lady

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'butterfly' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'gave some colour to madam' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'some' could be 'a' and 'a' is located in the answer.
'madam' could be 'lady' (synonyms) and 'lady' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for painted lady that I've seen before include "Butterfly" , "A flyer" , "flighty sort" , "Perhaps Madonna" , "Mona Lisa, perhaps" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
