Crossword Genius

Get it from sunfish (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ray

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'get it' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'sunfish' is the second definition.
The definition and answer can be both animals as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe you can see an association between them that I don't see?

'from' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ray that I've seen before include "Man who engaged in surrealist photography" , "Flatfish or sunbeam" , "Gleam" , "A little light" , "Broad flat fish; beam" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
