Get rid of electrical current for gas (8)
I believe the answer is:
firedamp
'for gas' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'get rid of electrical current' is the wordplay.
'get rid of' becomes 'fire' (as in firing from a job).
'electrical current' becomes 'damp' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'fire'+'damp'='FIREDAMP'
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for firedamp that I've seen before include "a particular horror of mine" , "Gas lit by a member" , "Methane in coalmines" , "Gas dangerous to miners" , "dangerously explosive" .)
