Crossword Genius

Get someone on your side to do well at bowling? (3,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

win over

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'get' is the definition.
(I know that win over is a type of persuade)

'well at bowling?' is the wordplay.
'well' becomes 'w' (this could be a standard abbreviation of which I'm unaware).
'at' becomes 'in' (synonymous in some cases - eg at school, in school).
'bowling?' becomes 'over' (cricket term).
'w'+'in'+'over'='WIN OVER'

'someone on your side to do' acts as a link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for win over that I've seen before include "Bring round (to idea)" , "Gain the support of" , "Persuade" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
