Get together when entertaining old ladies? (5)
I believe the answer is:
amass
'get together' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'when entertaining old ladies?' is the wordplay.
'when' becomes 'as' (eg 'when I walked' means 'as I walked').
'entertaining' is an insertion indicator (inviting in, as for dinner).
'old ladies?' becomes 'mas' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'as' enclosing 'mas' is 'AMASS'.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for amass that I've seen before include "Build up" , "Assemble" , "Stock up on" , "Be a compiler" , "Put together" .)
