Crossword Genius

Gets warmer food in hotel that's dearer (5,2)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

heats up

'gets warmer' is the definition.
(to get warmer is to heat up)

'food in hotel that's dearer' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'food' could be 'e' (E is an example) and 'e' is found within the answer.
'hotel' could be 'h' (phonetic alphabet: alpha, bravo, charlie etc.) and 'h' is present in the answer.
'dearer' could be 'up' (as in a price that has gone up) and 'up' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ats' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
