Getting quieter, month getting severely censored (11)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

decrescendo

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'getting' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'quieter month getting severely censored' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'month' could be 'dec' (abbreviation for December) and 'dec' is found in the answer.
an anagram of 'censored' is 'rescendo' which is within the answer.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for decrescendo that I've seen before include "(Musically) become quieter" , "With decreasing loudness (mus.)" , "Slow reduction in sound intensity" , "Reduction in loudness" , "decline" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
