Crossword Genius

Getting up, smell it - food (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tiffin

'food' is the definition.
(tiffin is a kind of food)

'getting up smell it' is the wordplay.
'getting up' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'smell' becomes 'niff' (niff is a kind of smell).
'niff'+'it'='niffit'
'niffit' in reverse letter order is 'TIFFIN'.

(Other definitions for tiffin that I've seen before include "(Anglo Indian) lunch" , "Lunch (British Raj)" , "Anglo-Indian lunch" , "Midday meal for members of the British Raj in India" , "Light (Indian) meal" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
