Give away lines? (4,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

free verse

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'lines?' is the definition.
(I have seen 'irregular lines' mean 'free verse' so perhaps 'lines' could also mean 'free verse')

'give away' is the wordplay.
'give' becomes 'free' (freeing is a kind of giving).
'away' becomes 'verse' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'free'+'verse'='FREE VERSE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for free verse that I've seen before include "Unconventional poetry" , "Ref severe on flowing poetry" , "irregular lines" , "Poetry without regular metre or rhyme" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
