Crossword Genius

Give much to the audience (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

allot

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'give' is the definition.
(I know that allot is a kind of give)

'much to the audience' is the wordplay.
'much' becomes 'lot' (I've seen this in other clues).
'to' means one lot of letters go next to another (I've seen this in other clues).
'the audience' becomes 'al' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'lot' put after 'al' is 'ALLOT'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for allot that I've seen before include "Allocate" , "Dish out" , "Apportion, share" , "Apportion (something to someone)" , "appropriate" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
