Crossword Genius

Give out, or pair off, last galactic visitor (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

meteorite

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'off last galactic visitor' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'give out or pair' is the wordplay.
'give out' becomes 'mete' (I've seen this in another clue).
'pair' becomes 'ite' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'mete'+'or'+'ite'='METEORITE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for meteorite that I've seen before include "Matter in the solar system that reaches earth" , "Rock that falls to earth" , "Lump from space" , "Piece of fallen star" , "Something falling from the sky" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
