Given a bell polished under pressure (6)
I believe the answer is:
phoned
'polished under pressure' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are past participle verbs, I don't see how one could define the other.
'given a bell' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'a' could be 'one' and 'one' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'phd' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for phoned that I've seen before include "Called" , "Rang" .)
