Given a hearty cheer, perhaps, took a seat (7)
I believe the answer is:
perched
'took a seat' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with contact as well as being past participle verbs.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?
'given a hearty cheer' is the wordplay.
'given' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'a' becomes 'per' (eg 'one a day' means 'one per day').
'hearty cheer' becomes 'ched' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'per'+'ched' is 'PERCHED'.
'perhaps' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Another definition for perched that I've seen is " Sat on a branch".)
