Ross

I believe the answer is:

spent

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'given errand' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with ownership as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe you can see an association between them that I don't see?

'to collect pennies to be this?' is the wordplay.
'to collect' indicates putting letters inside (inserted letters are collected by others).
'pennies' becomes 'p' (abbreviation for pence).
'to be this?' becomes 'sent' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'p' inserted into 'sent' is 'SPENT'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for spent that I've seen before include "Worn out having paid out money." , "Drained of energy - or paid out" , "(Of resources) exhausted" , "Completely exhausted" , "Worn Out, exhausted" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
