Crossword Genius

Good friend took in the revolutionary with a weapon (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

machete

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'weapon' is the definition.
(machete is a kind of weapon)

'good friend took in the revolutionary' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
an anagram of 'the' is 'het' which is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'mace' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'with a' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for machete that I've seen before include "Heavy knife used as weapon" , "Jungle blade" , "Broad heavy knife used in S American jungles" , "Jungle chopper" , "Cheat me over broad heavy knife used in jungle" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
