Got breakfast in bed for nothing (6)

I believe the answer is:
begged
'got breakfast' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with communicating as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe you can see a link between them that I can't see?
'in bed for nothing' is the wordplay.
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'for nothing' becomes 'egg' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'bed' placed around 'egg' is 'BEGGED'.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for begged that I've seen before include "Beseeched" , "Implored" , "Asked for alms" , "Pleaded for money" , "asked for money" .)
