Got up with difficulty, thoroughly confused (9)
I believe the answer is:
scrambled
'confused' is the definition.
Both the definition and answer are adjectives. Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?
'got up with difficulty thoroughly' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'got' could be 'led' (leading is a kind of getting) and 'led' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for scrambled that I've seen before include "like the RAF officer's eggs?" , "Thrown together in a disorderly fashion" , "Haphazardly thrown together" , "Made a broadcast signal unintelligible" , "Made electronic messages unintelligible" .)
