Crossword Genius

Government blocking insubstantial uprising at the end of the day (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

night

'the end of the day' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'government blocking insubstantial uprising' is the wordplay.
'government' becomes 'g'.
'blocking' is an insertion indicator.
'insubstantial' becomes 'thin' (I've seen this before).
'uprising' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'g' going within 'thin' is 'thgin'.
'thgin' written backwards gives 'NIGHT'.

'at' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for night that I've seen before include "See 1 Across" , "That's when it's darkest" , "Dark period" , "Ignorance" , "Thing (anag)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
