Gradually got rid of pronounced lack of confidence going on stage (6,3)
I believe the answer is:
phased out
'gradually got rid of' is the definition.
(to phase something out is to stop using it)
'pronounced lack of confidence going on stage' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'stage' could be 'phase' (both can mean a part or period of something) and 'phase' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'dout' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
