Ross

I believe the answer is:

alumni

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'graduates' is the definition.
('alumnus' can be a synonym of 'graduate')

'university of milan enlightened' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'university' could be 'u' (abbreviation for university) and 'u' is found in the answer.
an anagram of 'milan' is 'almni' which is located in the left over letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'from' is the link.

(Other definitions for alumni that I've seen before include "Put too much strain on, as Revenue Commissioners do" , "Graduates of an institution" , "Old boys and girls" , "Graduates of a college" , "Past pupils, Latin plural" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
