Crossword Genius

Graham Greene’s position? (5,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

third man

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'graham' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are singular nouns.
Perhaps you can see a link between them that I don't see?

'greene's position?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'position?' could be 'third' (third is a kind of position) and 'third' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'man' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for third man that I've seen before include "1949 British film set in Vienna, starring Orson Welles" , "position in the field?" , "Cricket fielding position (for a spy?)" , "Cricket fielder - "The ___" (Orson Welles film)" , "is close to the rope?" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
