Greet cook crossing line (6)
I believe the answer is:
salute
'greet' is the definition.
(I know that salute is a more specific form of the action greet)
'cook crossing line' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'line' could be 'l' (used when specifying particular lines from a poem) and 'l' is present in the answer.
'cook' could be 'saute' (I've seen this before) and 'saute' is found within the leftover letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
(Other definitions for salute that I've seen before include "Greet in military style" , "Hail respectfully" , "Greet in a friendly way" , "Military gesture of respect" , "Honour" .)
