Crossword Genius

Greeted, in soldierly style, a couple out of uniform (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

saluted

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'greeted in soldierly style' is the definition.
'saluted' can be an answer for 'greeted' (saluting is a kind of greeting). I'm unsure of the 'in soldierly style' bit.

'a couple out of uniform' is the wordplay.
'a couple' becomes 'salted' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'out of' indicates putting letters inside (some letters on the outside of others).
'uniform' becomes 'U' (phonetic alphabet: alpha, bravo, charlie etc.).
'salted' placed around 'u' is 'SALUTED'.

(Other definitions for saluted that I've seen before include "Acknowledged" , "Recognised with a gesture" , "Greeted or honoured" , "Presented arms" , "Due last (anag.)" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
