Crossword Genius

Group of students, say, being absorbed (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

intake

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'group of' is the definition.
'intake' can be an answer for 'group' (I have seen 'Group of pupils' mean 'intake' so perhaps 'group' could also mean 'intake'). I'm unsure of the 'of' bit.

I don't understand how the remainder of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for intake that I've seen before include "New recruits" , "(Quantity of) new students accepted by school" , "Entry for air, etc" , "Things or quantity imported" , "Place where gas or water enters" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
