Growing reasons for one to get more pay? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

irises

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'growing reasons' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'one to get more pay?' is the wordplay.
'one' becomes 'i' (Roman numeral).
'to get' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'more pay?' becomes 'rises' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'i'+'rises'='IRISES'

'for' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for irises that I've seen before include "Flags" , "Flowers and parts of eyes" , "blooms" , "Flowers painted by Van Gogh" , "Flowers found in the eye" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
