Crossword Genius

Guiding line about two similar points (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

steering

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'guiding' is the definition.
('steer' can be a synonym of 'guide')

'line about two similar points' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'points' could be 'ee' (an abbreviation for a compass point written twice) and 'ee' is found in the answer.
'line' could be 'string' (string line is a kind of line) and 'string' is located in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for steering that I've seen before include "Controlling the direction" , "Mechanism that allows a vehicle to be guided" , "Guiding or showing the way" , "Feature of vehicle" , "Guiding, directing the course" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
