Had one's fling at a fair game (5)
I believe the answer is:
shied
'had' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are past participle verbs, I can't see how they can define each other.
'one's fling at a fair game' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'one' could be 'i' (Roman numeral) and 'i' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'shed' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for shied that I've seen before include "started" , "Thrown" , "Jumped nervously; threw" , "horse did this?" , "Cast" .)
