Crossword Genius

Hag having energy cut off acquires old Scottish kettle (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cauldron

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'kettle' is the definition.
(I have seen 'Large kettle ' mean 'cauldron' so perhaps 'kettle' could also mean 'cauldron')

'hag having energy cut off acquires old scottish' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'old' could be 'auld' (similar in meaning) and 'auld' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for cauldron that I've seen before include "Very large metal pot for boiling" , "A large deep pot for boiling things" , "Very large pot used for boiling" , "Large cooking pot" , "Witch's brewing pot" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
