Half-a-dozen found a place and stayed (7)
I believe the answer is:
visited
'stayed' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with motion as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe you can see an association between them that I can't see?
'half-a-dozen found a place' is the wordplay.
'half-a-dozen' becomes 'vi' (Roman numerals for six).
'found a place' becomes 'sited' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'vi'+'sited'='VISITED'
'and' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for visited that I've seen before include "Called in (5)" , "Saw" , "Went to see" , "Looked up" , "came to see" .)
