Crossword Genius

Handy aid to warmth (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

muff

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'handy aid' is the first definition.
The definition and answer can be both acts as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'warmth' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how they can define each other.

'to' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for muff that I've seen before include "Botch" , "miss" , "Tube of fur - handle clumsily" , "Small furry covering to keep hands or ears warm" , "Mess up -- hand warmer" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph, The Globe and Mail and The Guardian.
