Handy form of communication? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

signing

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'handy form of communication?' is the definition.
(communicating with sign language)

'of communication?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'communication?' could be 'sign' (sign is a kind of communication) and 'sign' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for signing that I've seen before include "Writing" , "Autographing" , "recent addition to team" , "means of communication?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
