Crossword Genius

Happy lodging in Africa? (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

continent

'africa?' is the definition.
(africa is a kind of continent)

'happy lodging in' is the wordplay.
'happy' becomes 'content' (associated in meaning).
'lodging' means one lot of letters goes inside another (inserted letters are housed or lodged by others).
'content' enclosing 'in' is 'CONTINENT'.

(Other definitions for continent that I've seen before include "global sector" , "huge area of land" , "Europe, say" , "Africa, for example" , "Maybe more than one country" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
